Legendary musician Neil Young recently shared his admiration for A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet. Alongside his review of the film, Young also recounted a humorous and surprising memory of his early encounters with the iconic Dylan.
“I love Bob Dylan and his music. Always have. He’s a great artist,” Young wrote on his personal website, Neil Young Archives. “Once he was on my bus, and I didn’t recognize him and threw him off, but that’s another story.” Despite the amusing misstep, Young didn’t hold back his praise for the film.
“This movie is a great tribute to [Dylan’s] life and music,” Young continued. “I think if you love Bob’s music, you should see this great movie. I loved it.”
Directed by James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari, Logan), A Complete Unknown delves into Dylan’s meteoric rise to fame during the 1960s folk music revival. It also explores his profound influence on the era—a world Neil Young himself was deeply immersed in.
Critics Praise A Complete Unknown
Young’s glowing review isn’t the only one generating buzz. The Hollywood Reporter’s chief film critic, David Rooney, hailed the film’s authentic portrayal of Dylan’s journey and the rich New York City folk scene of the tumultuous decade.
“Any Dylan fan, or indeed anyone with a fondness for the music coming out of New York City in the first half of that tumultuous decade, will find ample pleasures in Mangold’s expertly crafted film,” Rooney wrote. “The period recreation is impeccable, and the many music performance sequences could not be more transporting.”
Rooney also lauded Chalamet’s transformation into Dylan, highlighting his commitment to learning guitar and mastering Dylan’s unique vocal style. “His voice—raw, nasal, scratchy but full of passion, anger, and wry wisdom—is near enough to the original to be unmistakable and yet colored by the actor’s persona to a degree that suggests something closer to symbiosis than impersonation.”
